Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Mr. Simpson. I had the chance to take Mr. Simpson’s 10th and 12th-grade classes, namely Modern European History and China after 1500. Besides teaching class material, Mr. Simpson always goes beyond superficial historical facts to help us explore the in-depth meanings and real-world significance of seemingly boresome events. I really enjoyed my personal conversations with Mr. Simpson as well. He helped me to navigate my role as a DEI coordinator at Shipley, my transitioning experiences from a different country, my understanding of history itself and its significance to us, and many more. I feel lucky to have Mr. Simpson as my teacher at Shipley.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was English 11 Honors. In this class, we read Norton Anthology, Passing, As I Lay Dying, Between the World and Me, and many other great books. I appreciated this class’s small seminar style, which allowed my classmates and me to discuss different books thoroughly. I also enjoyed learning about American history and culture from the perspective of diverse groups.
What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
In 2022, my friend and I joined the SPARC group to research race in the school curriculum. For this research, we utilized surveys, interviews, focus groups, and specific case studies of humanities courses. We presented our findings in a faculty meeting and successfully optimized the school’s coursework system.

How did Shipley prepare you to be your best self and do your best work?

Regarding community life, Shipley also gave me multiple opportunities to step up as a leader to serve my community, organize affinity groups, lead cross-school events, and advocate for minority rights.
How did Shipley encourage you to take risks?
As the president of the DEI Student Association, I often have to stand up for minority groups and advocate for their rights. Many times, this task came as challenging and difficult. However, by organizing different cultural events and talking to affinity groups, I understood that such risks were necessary to take. I will continue this courage in life.
