General Endowed Funds

Unrestricted endowment income, tuition revenue, Annual Fund gifts, and net proceeds from fundraising events are the main sources of revenue to support the School’s annual operating expenses. Income from Shipley’s general endowed funds, which are unrestricted in purpose, also supports the annual operations of the School.
 
Anonymous ’41 Fund
Established in 2012 by a bequest from a generous Shipley alumna from the Class of 1941, this fund is used for the general purposes of the School.
 
Black Alumni Association Fund
Established in 2022 through fundraising efforts led by Hakiem Coles ’07, this Fund supports curricular and cultural needs of Shipley’s Black students and teachers, with preference for activities and programs that provide the entire school community with a diverse, African-American experience integral to a shared American experience.

Crete Dillon Bowman Memorial Fund
Established in 1969 by John Bowman in memory of his wife, Crete, Class of 1927, this fund is used for general school support.
 
Richard Critchlow Brewer Performing Arts Fund
Established in 2002 by friends and former students in memory of Richard Brewer, Shipley’s beloved theatre teacher and director, this fund provides support to bring guest artists and performers to Shipley on an annual basis.
 
The J. Mahlon Buck Jr. and Elia D. Buck Fund
Established in 2011 through a bequest from the estate of J. Mahlon Buck, Jr., this fund is part of the permanent endowment of the School. Income from the fund is used for the general purposes of The Shipley School.
 
Daniel M. Caesar Memorial Fund
Established in 1993 by the family and friends of Dan Caesar ’90, this fund provides for the Daniel Caesar Music Performance Award and music lesson scholarships.

Chris Comstock Endowment Fund
Established in 2024 by Chris Comstock, Class of 2010. This Fund aims to maximize creative output among students by providing annual support for equipment purchases and upgrades in the areas of music recording and production, concert recording and sound reinforcement. 

Linda Coulson Memorial Fund
Established in 1998 in memory of Shipley parent Linda Coulson by her family and friends, this fund provides unrestricted endowment support.
 
Cynthia Ebert/Ford Foundation Upper School Opportunity Fund
Established in 2000 with grants from Michael Zisman and the Edward E. Ford Foundation, this fund provides support for Upper School students for ancillary expenses.
 
Epes/Young Lecture Fund
Comprised of the Isota Tucker Epes Lecture Fund, established by the Board of Trustees in 1972 on the retirement of Mrs. Epes as headmistress, and the Helen Young Lecture Fund, established in 1958 to honor the memory of Helen Hawthorne Young, head of Shipley’s English Department from 1928 until the year of her death in 1957, this fund supports lectures by visiting poets and writers of outstanding merit.
 
Giagnacova Memorial Landscaping Fund
Established in 1995 through a gift from the estate of Philip Giagnacova, a long-time Shipley friend, this fund helps beautify and maintain Shipley’s grounds.
 
Holocaust Fund
Established in 1997 by an anonymous donor, this fund supports a Middle School trip to the Holocaust Museum each year.
 
Penelope Hunt Julliard ’56 Memorial Fund
Established in 2005 by the Penelope Julliard Foundation and Olivier Julliard in memory of his wife Penelope Hunt Julliard ’56, this fund supports the linguistics award given annually in her honor, as well as financial assistance for the study of languages and cultures by faculty and students at Shipley.
 
Nancy E. Lauber Character Development Fund
Established in 2009 by trustee Derrik R. G. Morris ’80 and his husband James H. Kelleher in honor of Nancy E. Lauber, Shipley's Head of School from 1972 to 1979, this fund provides support for curricular programming and professional development to advance character education – the teaching and modeling of courage, responsibility, respect, and integrity.
 
Lyeth-Hooker Fund
Established in 1971 by Virginia Solley Risley ’37 in memory of her classmates, Josephine Good Lyeth and Isabel Day Hooker, this fund provides private music lessons and music instruments for students with financial need.
 
S.O.A.R. Fund
Established on the occasion of their 50th Reunion by the Class of 1972, the Shipley Open-Arms Resource Fund (S.O.A.R. Fund) supports full access for Shipley students with high financial need. This fund will not only benefit the students and families who draw on it each year, but also has the potential to foster a sense of equity and belonging by allowing all members of the Shipley community to participate in building the fund, according to their ability. Its existence and continual promotion will remind alumni, families, and students that we can all be part of making the full Shipley experience accessible to everyone.

Avery Silverman Memorial Fund
Established in 1999 in memory of Avery Blair Silverman, member of the Class of 2001, by family and friends, this fund supports special activities, programs, or awards in the School.
 
June Avery Snyder ’37 Memorial Fund
Established in 1987 by Martin Snyder in memory of his wife on what would have been her 50th Reunion, this fund helps students with promise in creative writing to pursue enrichment through travel.
 

Faculty Support Funds

Shipley’s faculty has been its greatest asset since the School was founded in 1894. Endowed funds designated for faculty support help to ensure that the School will be able to attract and retain outstanding educators for generations to come.
 
1894 Founders’ Chair
Established in 1987 by an anonymous donor to endow a teaching chair.

Class of 1975 Professional Development Award Fund
Established in 2015 by Susan Gaukler Zimmerman ’75, this fund supports an annual Denis Nicholson Asselin Professional Development award for a Shipley colleague. 

Colleague Recognition Fund
Established in 1998, this fund provides stipends for members of the Shipley faculty, staff, and administration whose active commitment to the School in a given year goes well beyond the realm of their normal responsibility. Awards that are associated with this fund are as follows:

Frances Duffy Award - Established in 2003 in memory of this long-time member of Shipley’s Upper School support staff.

Patrick Griffin Award -
 Established in 2003 in memory of this long-time member of the physical plant staff.

Elizabeth Bradley Holbrook Award -
 Established in 1998 by her two daughters and son in memory of this member of the Class of 1921.

Andrea and Warren Kantor Award -
 Established in 1998 by Shipley parents Andrea and Warren Kantor.

Dorothy Trice Award -
 Established in 1999 in memory of this long-time member of the Shipley faculty.
 
Roger S. Firestone Memorial Fund
Established in 1970 by the Board of Trustees to honor Roger S. Firestone, Shipley parent, benefactor and chairman of the School’s 75th Anniversary Endowment Fund Campaign, this fund supports faculty salaries.
 
Edward E. Ford Foundation Fund
Established by a Ford Foundation grant in 1971 and supplemented by additional grants, this fund supports faculty salaries.
 
Edward E. Ford Foundation Faculty Development Fund
Established in 1990 by the Ford Foundation, this fund supports Upper School faculty development.
 
Frances Fuguet Memorial Fund
Established in 1985 by the Board of Trustees to honor Bim Fuguet, Class of 1929, a 28-year Board member and founder of the Shipley Alumni Association, this fund supports faculty salaries.
 
Gary R. Gruber Professional Development Fund
Established in June 1992 to honor the accomplishments of departing headmaster, Gary Gruber, this fund supports professional development for faculty.
 
Dr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Heublein Fund
Established in the 1950s by a loyal Shipley family, this fund supports faculty salaries.
 
Rosenstiel Fund
Established in 1968 through a generous grant from the Rosenstiel Foundation, this fund provides support for faculty salaries.
 
Margaret Bailey Speer Distinguished Teachers Fund
Established by the School in 1997 in memory of Miss Speer, Shipley Headmistress from 1944 to 1965, this fund supports faculty salaries by recognizing particularly distinguished teachers each year. The Fund also includes the Middleton Memorial Fund, which was established as part of the Margaret Bailey Speer Distinguished Teachers Fund in 1999 in memory of Herbert Middleton, parent and member of the Board of Trustees (1980-1989), by an anonymous friend. This fund honors Herb’s interest in teaching excellence and love of the School.
 
J. Tyson Stokes Memorial Fund
Established by the Board in 1983 to honor the memory of J. Tyson Stokes, former Board chairman and husband of Gurney Fuguet Stokes, Class of 1929.
 
Susan Shaffer Wilson Memorial Fund
Established in 1970 in memory of Mrs. Wilson, a Shipley parent.
 
Allegra Woodworth Master Teaching Fund
Established in 1967 by Mr. and Mrs. J. Norman Henry, Jr. in memory of two well-loved Shipley parents, Frederick B. Hufnagel and John K. Willcox, and later Allison Sharp Hufnagel ’34, this fund is named in honor of Allegra Woodworth, beloved member of Shipley’s faculty for 44 years.

Tuition Assistance Funds

Shipley is committed to developing an educational community that reflects the diversity of the world around us and celebrates the richness that each student and family brings to the School. Endowed funds designated for tuition assistance help to ensure that the School will be able to maintain its commitment to make a Shipley education available to a broad range of outstanding students, regardless of financial need.
 
1969 Scholarship Fund
Established in 1969 by an anonymous Shipley family, this fund was one of Shipley’s first endowed funds providing scholarship money for students with financial need.
 
Melinda Clothier Biddle Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 2000 in memory of Melinda Clothier Biddle ’76 by her family and friends, this fund provides a student scholarship award.
 
Anne Garrett Buck Memorial Fund
Established in 1976 by her family in memory of Sissy Buck ’75, this fund provides a scholarship award for a student who, like Sissy, combines academic excellence with leadership and personal warmth. Included in this fund is the Tamara Tirjan Memorial Fund, which was established in 1982 by Tammy’s family and friends in her memory, to provide scholarship support.
 
Barbara Bullitt Watkins Christian ’38 Memorial Fund
Established in 2001 by Lowry Watkins, Jr., in memory of his mother, Barbara Bullitt Watkins Christian, Class of 1938, this fund benefits student tuition assistance, with preference given to Kentucky natives if the opportunity exists.
 
Class of 1951 Scholarship Fund
Established in 2000 by the Class of 1951 on the occasion of their 50th Reunion and given in memory of their deceased classmates, this Fund supports an award to an Upper School female whose enthusiasm for her classmates and the School reflects the spirit of the Class of 1951.
 
Class of 1952 Scholarship Fund
Established in 2012 by members of the Class of 1952 on the occasion of their 60th Reunion, this fund supports an award to a deserving Shipley student.
 
W. Gregory Coleman Fund
Established upon Greg Coleman's retirement at the end of the 2008-2009 academic year in honor of his extraordinary contributions as a teacher, administrator, and educator during his 32 years as a member of the Shipley community, this fund benefits student tuition assistance.
 
Beata Dabrowska DeVries Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1977 by her family and friends, this fund honors the memory of Biki DeVries ’51 and provides a scholarship for a student who shows interest and promise in art.
 
DeWitt Wallace/Reader’s Digest Fund
Established in 1970 through the generosity of DeWitt Wallace, chairman of Reader’s Digest, this fund supports need-based scholarships at Shipley.
 
Cynthia A. Ebert Scholarship Fund for Children of Color
Established in 1997 in memory of Cindy Ebert by her husband, Michael Zisman, and three children, Ruth ’00, Steven ’03, and Adam ’06, this fund provides financial assistance for students of color.
 
Elizabeth Crawford Hucker ’75 Scholarship Fund
Established in 2008 by the Board of Trustees in honor of Beth Hucker’s dedication to the School and her remarkable work as Chair of the Board of Trustees, this fund benefits student tuition assistance.
 
Dr. Lynn Ennis Iozzo Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 2014 in memory of Dr. Iozzo, a beloved Latin teacher and Shipley parent, this fund supports tuition assistance.
 
Margaret Reed Laveda Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1983 by a bequest of Margaret Reed Laveda, Class of 1918, this fund supports student scholarships.
 
Deborah Johnston Lionberger Scholarship Fund
Established in 1985 in memory of DiDi Lionberger ’54 by her family, this fund provides an Upper School student scholarship award and book prize each year.
 
The Diana Jackson Mather ’49 Memorial Fund
Established in 2014 by Diana Mather’s family in her memory, this fund provides student tuition assistance.
 
The Elizabeth Anne Maury ’47 Scholarship Fund
Established in 2016 by a bequest from Elizabeth Anne Maury ’47, this fund provides student tuition assistance.
 
The Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established in 1984 by Polly Wood Townsend ’36 in memory of her daughter, Betsy Townsend Jeanes ’61, this fund provides student tuition assistance and is supplemented by memorial gifts made to the School.
 
Florence R. C. Murray Fund
Established in 1987 with a grant from the Florence R.C. Murray Charitable Trust, this fund provides tuition assistance to students.
 
The Cayman J. Naib Memorial Fund
Established in 2015 in memory of Cayman Naib ’19, this fund provides student tuition assistance.
 
Thomas W. Nammack Scholarship Fund
Established by the Board of Trustees in 2005 on the occasion of Tom Nammack’s retirement as Head of the Upper School, this fund recognizes Tom’s incredible commitment to Shipley and its students with both a scholarship award and a student character award.
 
Janet Neville Memorial Fund
Established in 1956 by her family and classmates, this fund memorializes Janet Neville ’46 to provide a scholarship award for a junior student who demonstrates extraordinary academic achievement.

The Piltch Family Scholarship Fund
Established in 2019 by family and friends, the Piltch Family Scholarship Fund honors the contributions and commitment of Steve Piltch and Sunny Greenberg to Shipley, and it celebrates the experiences that they and their three children, Matthew ’08, Ali ’10, and Jamie ’13, had during their years at the School. This Fund supports scholarships awarded to students with financial need who demonstrate passion for life and compassion for others.
 
Brian Rapoport Memorial Fund
Established in 2002 in memory of Brian Rapoport, member of the Class of 2002, by his friends and family, this fund provides a student scholarship award.
 
Isabel Sherrerd Memorial Fund
Established in 1987 by Mrs. Sherrerd’s family, this fund honors her by providing needed financial assistance to worthy students.
 
Margaret Bailey Speer Fund
Established in 1985 by Peter and Felicity Roosevelt Benoliel ’57 to honor Miss Speer, this fund provides a yearly scholarship.
 
Staples Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1982 by the late Eleanor Philler Staples ’36 in memory of her husband Philip and daughter Molly, this fund provides aid to Lower School students.
 
J. Tyson Stokes Memorial Fund
Established by the Board of Trustees in 1983 to honor the memory of J. Tyson Stokes, former Board chairman and husband of Gurney Fuguet Stokes ’29, this fund supports tuition assistance.
 
Will Trippley ’02 Memorial Endowment Fund
Established in 2004 by a Shipley family in memory of Will Trippley ’02, this fund supports tuition assistance for Shipley students. 
 
Susan Shaffer Wilson Memorial Fund
Established in 1970 in memory of Mrs. Wilson, a Shipley parent, this fund supports tuition assistance.
 
Robert Elliot and Annette Field Worden Memorial Fund
Established in 1986 by the four Worden children, this fund honors the memory of the former Board Chairman and his wife and provides a scholarship and an award at the Upper School Closing Assembly.
 
The Austin Wylie Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 2018 in memory of Austin Wylie ’17, this Fund supports tuition assistance for Shipley students who embody Austin’s character traits and conviction, are athletically oriented, and have a passion for knowledge.
