Meet Ethan '24

Ethan Budway
Penn State University
Major/Area of Interest: Biology, Premed
Years at Shipley: 14

Activities and Positions Held:
Student Government, Community Life Representative, All School President

Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Mr. Amidon, because he encouraged a fun learning environment. Also Mr. Maurer due to his fantastic creative writing course.

What was your favorite class and why?
Creative writing, because I like to write creatively. It was one of my only courses where I was allowed to write about nearly anything I wanted to which I thought was very fun.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
Probably filming the "briefcase video" and speaking at the Class of 2024 at the final All School Assembly.

What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
Be proud of everything you do and put your best self out to the world.

Complete this sentence: Shipley prepared me to…
Succeed academically and socially as well as act as a leader.

How did Shipley prepare you to be your best self and do your best work?
Shipley taught me how to converse through class discussions and student government. The leadership skills I picked up at Shipley in and out of the classroom are incredibly important to me.

How did Shipley encourage you to take risks?
The overall environment encourages everyone to try things outside of their comfort
zone. I never thought that I'd run for All School President, but I decided to run and it turned out to be a great decision and became one of my favorite parts of my Shipley experience.

Please write a short reflection on your time at Shipley and what it has meant
to you.
I had a great experience at Shipley, and I can genuinely say that I wouldn't want my experience to be any different. It was really fun and an honor to serve as All School President and I know for a fact that I'll look back at my time here very favorably.
