Director of Athletics and PE: Justin Cooper

Justin Cooper serves as the Director of Athletics at The Shipley School, bringing a rich background in independent school education and athletics. With over fifteen years of experience as an administrator, teacher, coach, advisor, and mentor, Justin is dedicated to fostering a supportive and dynamic athletic environment.

Before joining Shipley, Justin was the Director of Athletics/Head of Physical Education and Health, as well as Upper School Dean of Students at the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy. During his eight-year tenure, Barrack Athletics achieved 20 Tri County and Penn Jersey League championships, established an Athletic Hall of Fame, and joined the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA). The school also received the Tri County Independent School League Award for Sportsmanship in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Justin coached Varsity Baseball and Cross Country, contributing to the holistic development of his athletes.

From 2006 to 2013, Justin served as the Director of Athletics at Doane Academy in Burlington, NJ. At Doane, he oversaw the construction of soccer and softball fields, established the Spartan Hall of Fame, and revitalized a dormant crew program. Under his leadership, Doane Athletics hosted and won their first-ever state playoff games in basketball, baseball, and softball. In recognition of his efforts, Justin was named Head of the Lower School in 2009 and received the HeadMaster’s Cup.

Justin holds a B.S. in Sport and Recreation Management from Temple University, where he played Varsity Baseball and received the Owl Club Award for Academic Excellence. He also earned an M.S. in Educational Leadership, Management, and Policy from Seton Hall University and holds a New Jersey Principal Certification. His leadership extended to serving as the President of the Penn Jersey Athletic Association from 2008 to 2016. Currently, he is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors at the West Hill School in Rosemont, PA.

Justin's vision for school athletics and physical education aligns perfectly with Shipley’s definition of Educational Excellence. His proven ability to lead teachers and coaches, engage families and alumni, and inspire students and athletes is evident throughout his career. He excels in creating a community where everyone shares and contributes to the vision of athletic excellence.

Residing in Bryn Mawr with his wife Christie, daughter Emory, and son Campbell, Justin is passionate about coaching and helping students reach their unique potential. He is committed to ensuring that Shipley's Physical Education and Athletic programs are integral to the development of each student, fostering resilience, compassion, and lifelong positive experiences.

Justin expressed his enthusiasm for his role at Shipley: "I am honored and excited to serve as Shipley's next Director of Athletics. Shipley's commitment to character and well-being is strengthened and reinforced through strong and vibrant Physical Education and Athletic programs. These are vital in the development of each student, allowing for self-definition and growth while creating resiliency and compassion. Being a Gator is a privilege, which by utilizing the outstanding facilities and knowledgeable and caring coaching/teaching staff we can create a vehicle where students have significant, positive experiences and build lifelong relationships and memories while competing at high levels.
