I’m an introvert, and he’s an extrovert,” says Emily Chapin Vollkommer ’05, of herself and her brother Colin Chapin ’08. At Shipley, they both thrived. “We could be our own people,” Colin says.
Emily delighted in the Flute Ensemble, Sprouts Garden Club, and the tennis and swim teams. Colin participated in just about everything from the Madriguys a capella group to cross-country. The two have in common a spirit of generosity, something they gleaned from their parents, Kate and Tom Chapin, who remain active members of the Shipley community. Emily and Colin have each contributed to the Annual Fund since graduation, a gesture uncommon for alumni so young, but unremarkable to the two of them. “I don’t remember it even being a question that we’d do that,” says Emily.
Emily now lives and works in Manhattan, where she’s Collections Access Archivist for the Museum of the City of New York. She spends her days researching, archiving, and processing collections, and guiding research inquiries. “I love it,” she says.
Meanwhile, Colin lives and works in Boston as Associate Investment Director at Cambridge Associates. He’s taken giant steps since signing on there in 2015 as an Investment Associate and feels Shipley was foundational to his later success. “You could develop a love of learning for learning’s sake, with no pressure to go a certain route.”
Adds Emily, “How they see the individual and the best ways to connect with them is why we both had such a wonderful experience.”
