Who was your most influential teacher and why?
My most influential teacher was Mr. Hornung because of his unique approach to class discussions in English. I was lucky enough to have him sophomore year and first semester of my senior year. I enjoyed my time in both of his English classes because of the engaging discussions.

What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was my 10th-grade English class because Mr. Hornung taught it, and the content was enjoyable. I remember reading Maus which was one of my favorite novels to cover.

What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My most memorable experience at Shipley was Super Saturday my Junior year. Every time Super Saturday happened, I had a lot of fun, but something about the one junior year being under the lights watching the boys’ soccer game and having a level of seniority added to the already awesome experience.

What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
The first part, Courage for the Deed, means being brave to do something or get something done. Grace for the Doing means doing things while keeping others in mind and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Complete this sentence: Shipley prepared me to…
Shipley prepared me to be a changemaker and not be afraid to take risks. I also feel like Shipley taught me how to use my resources and be a self-advocate.

How did Shipley prepare you to be your best self and do your best work?
Shipley prepared me to be my best self by sharpening my public speaking skills through my time as class president. It also humbled me through my journey in Physics Honors and taught me that it’s okay that sometimes not everything will come as easy and that I just need to put in the extra work. It prepared me to do my best work through all of the rigorous courses I have taken.

How did Shipley encourage you to take risks?
Shipley encouraged me to take risks by offering many different clubs and activities that I could participate in. Once I was immersed in these different activities, opportunities were raised for me to take risks and all I had to do was say yes, I would do whatever the task was. I think being class president encouraged me to take many risks because at times in the beginning it took a lot for me to comfortably speak out to people, but now I feel like it is second nature to me. I am grateful for all the opportunities at Shipley that allowed me to branch out and try something new like DECA. Before randomly signing up for DECA, I had no idea what it was about, but I decided to take a risk and ended up loving it, and even gained a lot of fun memories from the trips.

Please write a short reflection on your time at Shipley and what it has meant to you.
I had some ups and downs during my time at Shipley socially. At first, it was difficult to integrate into the class with most of the students already having formed friendships in 4th grade. Then missing 6th grade where many new students came was another setback because friendships had already begun forming. But with time things got better. I would say I definitely enjoyed my time in high school the most. I became more involved and met a lot more people, and even interacted with a lot of the other grades. Aside from the social aspect, I appreciate all of the teachers at Shipley who are passionate about their jobs because it shows when a teacher genuinely wants to aid in your success. One thing I love about Shipley is that I was able to be class president while also being in the play, playing soccer, and DECA all at the same time. Keeping busy in all different areas made my time more enjoyable. I felt like I could fill my schedule and always have something to look forward to. Shipley has set a great foundation for me going forward in my career in college. I am grateful for all of my experiences at Shipley and the time I was able to spend there. Shipley helped shape me into the person I am today.
