Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Mr. Oatts, because he provided the foundation for me to pursue music as a possible career. He also spent countless amounts of time helping me prepare for music school admissions and the auditions process and was there for me the entire time.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was absolutely Comparative Anatomy and Neuroscience, which I took with Mr. Clement in 11th grade. I really enjoyed the collaborative nature of the class, and how I could tie it into my medical interests and my work in medicine outside of school.
What was your most memorable experience at Shipley?
My most memorable experience at Shipley was getting to play in the Honors Combo. We had the privilege to play at countless gigs outside of school, got to compete at the National Jazz Festival (and won!), and were able to help bring music not only to the Upper School but also to the Middle and Lower Schools as well. Most of all though, I was able to build friendships through it that heightened my high school experience immensely.
What does Courage for the Deed; Grace for the Doing mean to you?
It means learning to lean into challenges, push yourself, and excel at critical and creative thinking alike.
Complete this sentence: Shipley prepared me to…
Interact with my community in a meaningful and contributive manner.
How did Shipley prepare you to be your best self and do your best work?
Shipley taught me to balance my personal, work, and academic lives in a way that lets me enjoy all of them equally.
How did Shipley encourage you to take risks?
Shipley encouraged me to pursue my interests in medicine by providing me the time to volunteer as an Emergency Medical Technician outside of school. This provided invaluable experience in customer relations, medicine, and community outreach and I plan to continue doing it for the rest of my life.
Please write a short reflection on your time at Shipley and what it has meant to you.
Overall, my time at Shipley was an incredible experience even though it was only two years of my high school career. Despite the short length, though, it prepared me for college and set me on a course from starting as an amateur musician to being able to study music performance in college.
