Housed in a major corridor connecting the Upper School’s three main buildings, Shipley’s Speer Gallery is a dynamic showcase for professional artists, hosting rotating exhibitions throughout the school year. The annual schedule includes a Shipley alumni show, the annual senior student show, a faculty show, and a highlight exhibit from the internationally acclaimed West Collection. Under the new leadership of art teacher and Gallery Director Julia Staples, the gallery is more than just a display space—it’s a hub for learning, connection, and meaningful conversation.
A Bold Vision
“I want the exhibitions to be engaging—not just for art students, but for anyone walking by,” Ms. Staples explains. “The work should spark conversation, connect to student interests, and invite collaboration across subjects like History, Science, and English.” This thoughtful approach is already shaping the gallery’s programming. Ms. Staples emphasizes, “Art shouldn’t just sit on the walls. It should stop you, make you think, and inspire dialogue.”
Exhibits That Matter
An exhibition earlier this year, La Caravana del Diablo by photographer Ada Trillo, captured the experiences of migrants journeying over 2,400 miles to flee violence in Central America. Trillo’s immersive process—walking alongside migrants—produced images that are raw, human, and deeply emotional. “This show is resonating with everyone,” Ms. Staples shares. “Students, teachers, and even staff members have stopped to talk about it. That’s when I know the work is meaningful.” Raquel Bejar Massey’s Spanish 5 Honors students have engaged further, hosting a conversation with the artist on Zoom.
The current exhibition includes works by local Philadelphia artists—Sophie White, Nasir Young, and Drew Leshko—exploring urban development and the changing cityscape. Ms. Staples also hopes to host artist workshops and informal gallery talks during student breaks. “I want students to know this space is for them,” Ms. Staples says. “When art sparks connection and curiosity, it becomes something they carry with them.”
