The Lower School encourages digital literacy and academic excellence. Our students make use of a variety of digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively. This page highlights samples of student-centered, performance-focused learning experiences.

Personal Montages by Our Fifth Graders

As the year draws to a close, our fifth graders had the opportunity to create a digital reflection of their final year in the Lower School. Using Windows Moviemaker, the students selected photos from the many that were taken throughout the year, added transitions, special effects, music and (sometimes) video clips, and made personal memory montages that will help them fondly recall their time at the Shipley Lower School. Here are just a few.

Internet Safety Stories

As part of our  lessons for Online Awareness the fourth graders created Internet Safety stories for their book buddies to help teach them about being safe on the internet. The criteria were age-appropriate language and vocabulary, colorful illustrations and easy-to-read, simple text that would keep their buddy's attention. Here are three examples of these stories.

Kindness is . . .

This is a project done in Betsy Leschinsky’s Friendship class that asked the children to describe what kindness means to them. Here are some of our children’s own definitions.

Kidspiration Webs

The children in second grade were introduced to Kidspiration, a mind-mapping program, which helps them to organize their information or facts around a central idea. These maps were focused around what they want to do or learn in school this year. It was a multi-step project where they had to create the bubbles, fill them in with text, and then change the bubbles into relevant pictures. Once they learned how to use the program, they created new webs around their thoughts on Heroes or Fall. Some of those are included here.

Wishes for Haiti

The first grade children wanted to do something special for the children in Haiti so they created these pictures and messages inKidPix. The pictures were then taken to Haiti by a physician parent who was going to help in one of the field hospitals.

Kindergarten ABC’s and 123’s

The kindergarten students helped me create this book to complement what they are learning in their classes. After doing several alphabet activities on various websites the children made their own letter or number in KidPix. They were randomly assigned a letter or number and could draw it, write it or stamp it and find pictures that started with the same beginning sound as the letter. For the numbers, they had to stamp that number of pictures to correspond with that number. The pictures were saved as Jpegs, inserted into a document and uploaded to www.scribd.com where it is formatted as a book.
