Support Shipley

There are many ways for individuals who believe in the value and quality of the work that Shipley is doing with its students to support that effort, and the School feels enormously fortunate that so many people step forward in a variety of ways. All Independent Schools depend on the generosity of their parents, alumni, and other friends for financial support and gifts of time. For more information about the many ways in which members of the Shipley community can volunteer time to help the School, visit Volunteer Opportunities.

Contributions of financial support generally fall into two categories: 1) Unrestricted Annual Fund gifts, and 2) Gifts restricted to a particular program or purpose. What follows is a brief description of each. For more detailed information on either, simply visit the appropriate area.

Annual Giving

Unrestricted contributions given and spent within the current fiscal year in support of the School’s operating budget.

The Annual Fund provides significant and essential yearly revenue to The Shipley School’s operating budget. After tuition, Annual Fund contributions are the single largest source of yearly income for the School, and Shipley’s continued financial health is dependent on the success of the yearly Annual Fund effort.

Annual Fund gifts support all areas of the School, and are unrestricted in nature so that the contributions can be used where they are most urgently needed. The largest area supported by the Annual Fund is faculty and staff salaries, benefits, and professional development. Other significant areas affected by Annual Fund gifts are academic, athletic, and arts programs; financial aid; and facilities maintenance.

Annual Fund contributions to Shipley range from $5 to $45,000, and all members of the Shipley community—parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, and other friends—are asked to participate in making an Annual Fund gift each year.

For more information about Shipley’s Annual Fund, contact Margaret Anne Ritter, Director of Annual Giving, at 610.581.4655 or annualfund@shipleyschool.org. For additional information about volunteering with the Annual Fund visit the Annual Fund Volunteer page.

Capital Giving

Single- or multi-year gifts given in addition to Annual Giving and designated to support specific goals, programs, and projects identified by the Board of Trustees in the School's Strategic Plan.

Above and beyond Shipley's need for yearly operating support is its need to plan and provide for the School's long-term health and academic vitality. Shipley's Operating Budget does not address the necessity for increased endowment and facility improvements. These needs must be met by those who can afford to make capital gifts in addition to their Annual Fund gifts.

In 2002 Shipley completed a $20 million Capital Campaign. The four specific priorities identified for this Campaign were: 1) Endowment for faculty and students, 2) Current capital in support of technology 3) Facilities additions and renovations touching all three academic divisions of the School, and 4) Land Acquisition.

Currently the School is engaged in ongoing work on increasing the Endowment Fund. For questions about the Campaign, Endowment or other projects that might be in need of funding, please contact Christopher Farr, Director of External Relations at 610-581-4650 or cfarr@shipleyschool.org.
